Concept
Dive the Coast is set to run June 1-30, 2013. With five full weekends that month, that gives big counties with lots of divers time to cover as much of their coast as possible, and gives extra days to those counties that don't have many divers so they can dive on multiple weekends.
Because of the enormity of this event, we've divided the state into three sections:
Northern: Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Sonoma, Marin
Central: San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Luis Obispo
Southern: Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego
California has 15 coastal counties, and each will organize its own divers. We're still looking for organizers in the unclaimed counties, as well as people who can volunteer their boats in the Northern sector, which has limited shore access. As an incentive, whoever agrees to take on an organizing role gets to decide where their county's money goes.
Organizers are responsible for finding divers to participate and partnering with conservation organizations. They're also responsible for setting up test dives ahead of the 2013 event, and figuring out logistics - boat vs. shore dive, entry/exit points, etc. - ahead of the actual Dive the Coast event.
